In Reflection

(a response to Carlos Castaneda’s A Seperate Reality)

I do not wish to understand;

Only to learn.

I do not need to comprehend;

Only to experience.

I do not want to document,

But to live.

Don Juan says to live

Like a warrior.

He does not mention

“Think” or “talk;”

But only to live.

Don Genero leaped

Into impossibility -

But only if you do not See.

It was a wildly fantastic leap

Of will.

Not willfullness,

Nor resilience, nor

Stubbornness compounded;

His magic comedy

Simply is.

Indulgence in stupidity

Is, “I must understand,

Explain to me the ‘hows,’

A discussion must be had.”

Sorrowful tragedy of loss

This blinding

“Comprehension.”

Golden Themed Heart Sleeve

For Elan.

An unexpected kindness,
This unseen intuition.
Ever present smile says
Don’t be so serious

Accepting and relaxed
Forgiveness –themed philosophy
Speaks volumes of compassion
Rejecting slants of lethargy.

Chosen insightful naïveté
Bears friendly fruits
Contagious happiness
Healing scarred wounds

No need to explain himself
To those who do not ask
A wasted life is one
Whose impact does not last.

A Short Poem About My Favorite

Nurturing mother
Intelligence brimming sense of humor
Killer of the hearts; always gorgeous
Kindness infused mantra
Intuition inspired empathy

Nostalgia saddened days
Ending in love filled nights
When it is dark, you are light
Meaning the world to those you love
Always sharing strength
Never selfish; never mean.

Remember who you are (it's more than enough).

Cynical Conclusion

Slightest touch of breeze upon my face

Faintest wafting scent upon the air

Almost imagined whispered song

Hinted caress’ pressure on my skin

It’s where you must have been

Familiar aching, straining heart

Sinking defeated soul’s despair

Recurring hopeless lethargy

Blinding broken willful fight

You’re more than out of sight

No resilience resonating now

Drained desire to connect

Fatalistic -inspired apathy

Another brick in wall of self defense

To love again does not make sense

Plea for Paradise

Welcome to the Caribbean,
Where romantics are born
And frosty hearts will melt;
Seduction is suntanned skin,
Sunscreen scented sexuality
And sea breeze tousled hair.

Shore lapping indigo says
Lay your nostalgia to rest
Warm your aching limbs
In tiny pebble blankets,
Close busy overburdened eyes
Breathe in rhythmic waves;
My kindness keeps you safe.

Siren song paradise pulls
At yearnings of the heart
“Everyone wants to live here
But no one wants to move”
Lashing rainstorm tear reminders
Of what they’ve left behind
Come home, beloved miserable
Trapped and busy souls!

All are welcome on our shores.

Mothers' Day

i smell you in the ocean

and i see you in the sky

i feel you in my heart,

i hear you in my cry

a little girl,

i thought that everything would last

life was candy lollipops and gumdrops in the sky

lessons came in billions then, followed with a “why?”

a stubbed toe? i thought that i would surely die

a mirror’s glance into my eyes

reveals the part of me that’s you

my heartbeat stops and tears well up

it’s a part of you i wish i knew

as i grew up

i learned to hide my soul

covered tears with bravest smile

in every breath denied the trial

saw an inch and ran the mile

not angry at you anymore

that took too long to say

seven years have passed and yet,

i miss you every day

twenty-two

but still unsure

i’m tearing down the wall

accepting when i fall

admitting i can’t cure them all

a life without a mother

can tear your heart away

so cherish yours, forever.

and happy mother’s day.

Conscious Deprivation

He has a fear of dying, though

Even in this land

Feels the sea tide pull him wider

Dreads his death upon the sand

With roosters ca-ca-crowing in the distance

He’s still afraid to die

And cannot wait to hold his children

But he’s terrified to fly

The warmth absorbs his love in pulses

He eagerly awaits the sun

Mornings tell him all is well

He’ll die and rot when day is done

I cannot fathom what he thinks

Before he falls to sleep

Thanks Anybody? Counts his Who’s?

And promises to keep

But, here, look again!

I think I saw a spark

His smile says today is different

I’m questioning the mark

Then sunny mountainside is shaded

Dark speck upon the land

His gaze is drawn; his heart stops cold

He doesn’t understand

A fleeting moment fantasy

He files it away

Too much to dream, to big to plan

Just work another day

The Elephant has Died

I can see it in your eyes

Unfocused and half closed
The wrinkle in your smile says
You wouldn't have supposed
That anyone could figure out
Just how wrong it went
You think that you're deceiving us
That we're all off your scent

Clearly in your ragged breath
And lackluster take on life
A sickened song of sorrow tells
A Tale of Wasted Life
Somber self-inflicted self-sufficiency
Is slipping through the cracks
You're nodding off in public
And you're more than just relaxed

Taste the guilt, swallow the shame
As it drips into your throat
Before you smother soul to death
Be sure to write a note
To tell us how we all have failed
There's nothing we could do
To say I know you loved me but, well
Fuck you.

Breeding War

Sri Lankan kids inside the jungle
Taking shelter from the bombs
Stand beside the rebel soldiers
And watch their daddies kill their moms

Haitian children live in huts
Don’t go to school, can’t read a book
Their parents cannot feed them - ever
But we can’t see if we don’t look

In Gaza, secret army soldiers die
For children shot, and killed, and terrified
So posters now display the losses
They’re peppering the countryside

Chinese teens have been detained
For remembering the fight
That failed to bring their honor back
That failed, again, to show what’s right

The Belgian painted killer who
Could hear the voices in his head
Rode his bike into a town
And left a score of toddlers dead

And when their lifeblood jobs were lost
A Californian man and wife
Knew desperation, thought long and hard
And then they took their children’s lives

These are the headlines – all today
Death, destruction, blood, and war
So when these kids grow up to hate
I’ll bet you’ll wish you had done more.

Death to Gaza

You terrorists deserve to die
You, who fight for freedom
Defend your tattered nation
Demand fair trade, a border crossing
Water, food, and band-aids for your kids
You all deserve to die

Never mind the fence around you
Look away from smoking craters
You don’t need a gun to save you
Nor vests to stop the bullets’ path
Bow down before our Lord
His vengeance is your death
You all deserve to die

No holy land for you
Sovereign nation you are not
We would enslave you if we could
Spit upon your open graves
Rid the world of your disease
You all deserve to die

We are the victims here, you see
Five soldiers dead
Nuisance dud-bombs tickling our empty land
Our allies give us guns
Then tell us not to shoot
(Too often)
Or, if we do, act like it was you, because
You all deserve to die
